Viking Therapeutics shares jumped more than 25% on Tuesday after the company said its experimental weight loss pill showed positive results in a small study and will enter the next stage of development later this year. The study results add to the excitement around the drugmaker's prospects in the budding weight loss drug market. Based on Tuesday's results, Viking plans to start a phase two trial of its weight loss pill later this year. Weight loss for those patients ranged up to 3.6% higher than those who received a placebo. Viking CEO Brian Lian said during a conference call on Tuesday that it's unclear "how durable" the weight loss is.

In this article VKTX Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTCr | Istock | Getty ImagesBiotech company Viking Therapeutics has emerged as a strong potential entrant — or takeover target — in the budding weight loss drug market. Their treatments sparked the weight loss drug industry gold rush over the past year despite their hefty price tags and barriers to insurance coverage. It's too early to say whether Viking's drug could have an edge over existing or developing weight loss treatments. The pharmaceutical giant could also launch a slate of other weight loss treatments over the next few years that may have advantages over Zepbound, whether they offer more weight loss or convenience. That could give Viking the commercial and manufacturing capabilities needed to compete in the weight loss drug market.

Shares of Viking Therapeutics soared more than 80% in premarket trading Tuesday after the company's experimental weight loss drug showed promising initial results in a mid-stage trial. Viking Therapeutics is one of several small obesity drugmakers hoping to enter the budding weight loss drug industry, which analysts say could grow into a $100 billion market by the end of the decade. Separately, the company said it expects to release early-stage trial data on an oral version of its weight loss drug. Viking Therapeutics' drug targets GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP. Those are the same hormones that Eli Lilly's weight loss and diabetes drugs, Zepbound and Mounjaro, target.

Myanmar sank into civil war after the army seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. At least 107 religious buildings — including 67 churches and five Buddhist monasteries — have been destroyed by the military since the 2021 takeover in Chin state alone, the Chin Human Rights Organization said. Myanmar Witness cross-checks evidence such as photos, videos and witness accounts found on social media with satellite photo analysis and other methods to try to verify human rights abuses. Many human rights activists believe that the military aims for religious buildings. "I can think of 10 that I’ve already seen in ruins or big holes in them, direct airstrikes," Eubank said.

As the median population age increases, so do opportunities for Singapore businesses providing products and services for seniors. According to Aging Asia's Silver Economy Index 2020, Singapore shows the largest market potential for an aging population among 15 Asia-Pacific countries. Citibank estimates that consumers will likely spend more to treat and support the elderly, driving growth potential for health care and health services.

While the statement does not identify Thunberg by name, a spokesperson for the Swedish Prosecution Authority, Annika Collin, confirmed to CNN that the woman referred to is Thunberg. The charges relate to Thunberg’s participation in a protest organized by the activist group Ta Tillbaka Framtiden, which blocked oil tankers in part of Malmö harbor. “Today, for the third day in a row, young activists from @tatillbakaframtiden have blocked oil tankers in the Malmö oil harbour. Irma Kjellström, spokesperson for Ta Tillbaka Framtiden, said Thunberg was one of many young people blocking oil tankers. In January, Thunberg was detained by police during a protest in the village of Lützerath, Germany, over the expansion of a coal mine.

In an era defined by the need to tackle climate change, electric vehicles are seen as an increasingly important part of the solution. For Philip Ripman, portfolio manager at Storebrand Asset Management, one global EV automaker stands out: China's BYD — not Elon Musk's Tesla . Public transport operator Nobina already operates over 300 BYD electric buses across multiple Nordic cities. Affordable and high-end vehicles Another reason Ripman favors BYD over Tesla is the former's broader range of vehicles. On Tesla, Ripman expressed some concern over CEO Musk's distractions and their potential impact on the automaker's stock price.
Now some other economists have demonstrated a second mechanism by which a government could run deficits and never have to pay for them. Unlike Blanchard’s mechanism, it doesn’t depend on the relationship of interest rates to economic growth. Their research came out last month as a working paper released by the National Bureau of Economic Research. “Can Deficits Finance Themselves?” is the paper’s provocative title — evoking, to me anyway, the Laffer Curve theory that tax cuts can pay for themselves. The economists concluded that “deficits contribute to their own financing via two channels.” First, they can accelerate economic growth, which generates more tax revenue.
May 2 (Reuters) - International law firm Squire Patton Boggs said on Tuesday it has hired partner Lian Yok Tan for its energy and infrastructure practice in Singapore. Tan joins from K&L Gates, where she was global co-head of the energy, infrastructure and resources practice, Squire Patton Boggs said. Barry Stimpson, Squire Patton Boggs’ Singapore office managing partner, said in a statement that Tan has connections across the Asia Pacific, particularly in Indonesia, which will help the firm secure new clients. On Monday, Squire Patton Boggs became the latest law firm to set up an office in Dublin. In March, the firm signed a cooperation agreement with The Law Office of Looaye M. Al-Akkas for a new office in Riyadh.
CNN —Russia has a fleet of suspected spy ships operating in Nordic waters as part of a program for the potential sabotage of underwater cables and wind farms in the region, according to a joint investigation by the public broadcasters of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The investigation also said Russian ships appear suddenly following NATO exercises. One ship at the center of the investigation, the Admiral Vladimirsky, is officially used for underwater research expeditions, but is, according to the report, a Russian spy ship. A masked man emerged on the deck of the Admiral Vladimirsky, the ship at the center of an investigation that found a Russian fleet of suspected spy ships in Nordic waters. The investigation comes after Dutch intelligence officials warned Russia had tried to gain intelligence to prepare for the potential sabotage of critical infrastructure in their patch of the North sea.

While shots like these used to require advanced cameras, they’re now often possible from the phone you already carry around in your pocket. People watch fireworks during a Fourth of July celebration, in this photo taken using the Google Pixel 5 Night Sight setting. “The quality of the lens is still a big deal, and how the phone addresses the lack of depth,” Ray said. The next big thingWhile night photography on phones has come a long way, a buzzy new technology could push it ahead even more. If this technology is added to smartphone photo systems, it could eventually make night modes even more powerful, Su said.
The letter comes just two weeks after OpenAI announced GPT-4, an even more powerful version of the technology that underpins the viral AI chatbot tool, ChatGPT. The wave of attention around ChatGPT late last year helped renew an arms race among tech companies to develop and deploy similar AI tools in their products. Artificial intelligence experts have become increasingly concerned about AI tools’ potential for biased responses, the ability to spread misinformation and the impact on consumer privacy. Lian Jye Su, an analyst at ABI Research, said the letter shows legitimate concerns among tech leaders over the unregulated usage of AI technologies. But he called parts of the petition “ridiculous,” including the premise of asking for a hiatus in AI development beyond GPT-4.
CNN —On the eve of a high-profile TikTok hearing this week, the company shared that it now has more than 150 million US monthly active users. “This uncertainty could push some TikTok content creators to focus more on, and possibly begin, pushing their audiences to other social network platforms,” Mogharabi said. Snap’s stock rose in the days leading up to TikTok’s appearance before Congress amid renewed talks among federal officials of a TikTok ban. Alex Brandon/APIf that happens, Lian Jye Su, an analyst with ABI Search, believes users will follow their favorite TikTok influencers and content creators wherever they go. For now, talk of a TikTok ban may still be premature.
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the next-generation version of the artificial intelligence technology that underpins its viral chatbot tool, ChatGPT. The company said GPT-4 recently passed a simulated law school bar exam with a score around the top 10% of test takers. Providing more precise responsesCompared to the prior version, GPT-4 is able to produce longer, more detailed and more reliable written responses, according to the company. One early user said it provided in-depth suggestions for pickup lines based on a question listed on a dating profile. “They can produce inaccurate information from time to time and can be black-box in nature.”For now, OpenAI said GPT-4 users should exercise caution and use “great care” particularly “in high-stakes contexts.”

The dark side of Bing’s new AI chatbot

CNN —After asking Microsoft’s AI-powered Bing chatbot for help in coming up with activities for my kids while juggling work, the tool started by offering something unexpected: empathy. The chatbot said it “must be hard” to balance work and family and sympathized for my daily struggles with it. “The tone of the responses is unexpected but not surprising,” Lian Jye, a research director at ABI Research, told CNN. When I asked Bing’s AI chatbot to write a short essay about me, for example, it pulled tidbits of information from parts of the internet to provide an eerily similar but largely fabricated account of my life. “The inaccuracies are expected because it depends on the timeliness of the training data, which is often older,” Jye said.
The company sold 10 million American depository receipts (ADRs) at $19 apiece, according to its regulatory filings, and shares closed at $21.05. The deal is the biggest from a Chinese company selling shares in New York since LianBio (LIAN.O) raised $334 million in October 2021, according to Refinitiv data. Chinese company listings in the United States ground to a halt in 2021 after the debut of ride hailing giant Didi Global Inc (92Sy.MU) in June of that year. As a result, Chinese listings in the United States dwindled and mainland regulators also moved to draw up new guidelines governing companies selling shares overseas. Chinese companies raised nearly $230 million in U.S. listings in 2022, according to Refinitiv data, representing a massive drop from $12.85 billion a year earlier.
CNN Business —An entire generation of internet users has approached search engines the same way for decades: enter a few words into a search box and wait for a page of relevant results to emerge. Bing will not only provide a list of search results, but will also answer questions, chat with users and generate content in response to user queries. “We have even more exciting, AI-enabled innovations in the works that will change the way people search, work and play. These models are trained on vast troves of online data in order to generate compelling responses to user prompts. Microsoft and Google executives have acknowledged some of the potential issues with the new AI tools.
Hong Kong CNN —China’s economy is under severe strain as a wave of Covid cases sweeps across the country. Factories and companies are also forced to shut down or cut production because of more workers getting sick. Nationwide, truck cargo volumes and delivery orders both shrank in the past week, according to statistics from the transportation ministry and the postal service regulator. Many factories have been forced to shut down for weeks because of sick workers and lack of orders, according to Chinese media. The next few weeks may be “the most dangerous” for China’s battle with Covid, said Capital Economics analysts.

Moller-Maersk (MAERSKb.CO) said on Monday it had appointed company veteran Vincent Clerc as its new chief executive to lead the shipping giant through a period of slowing container demand. "The strong tail winds that benefited the supply chain industries during the pandemic are coming to an end," Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla told a press conference at the company's headquarters in Copenhagen. Shares in Maersk have roughly doubled since Skou took over as CEO in 2016. Copenhagen-based Maersk is one of the world's biggest shipping and logistics companies, handling supply chains for large customers like Walmart and Nike.
OpenAI last week opened up access to ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot that interacts with users in an eerily convincing and conversational way. On Monday, Open AI’s co-founder Sam Altman, a prominent Silicon Valley investor, said on Twitter that ChatGPT crossed one million users. It comes from the same company behind DALL-E, which generates a seemingly limitless range of images in response to prompts from users. If you plan to be outside, you should wear a light jacket or sweater, long pants, and closed-toe shoes,” ChatGPT responded. Possible issuesWhile ChatGPT successfully fielded a variety of questions submitted by CNN, some responses were noticeably off.
CNN Business —Apple reportedly wants to put an end to “Hey.”The company is said to be training its voice assistant Siri to pick up on commands without needing the first half of the prompt phrase “Hey Siri.” The trigger phrase is used to launch Siri on various products, including the iPhone, iPad, HomePod and Apple Watch. “‘Siri’ is much shorter than ‘Hey Siri,’ giving the system potentially less comparison points and higher error rate in an echo-y, large room and noisy environments,” such as in the car or when wind is present. The move would allow Apple to catch up to Amazon’s “Alexa” prompt that doesn’t require a first wake word for its voice assistant. The company then integrated Siri into the iPhone 4S, which was released the following year, and introduced the ability to say “Hey Siri” without physically touching a button in 2014. “While the ‘Hey Siri’ change requires a considerable amount of work, it would be surprising if Apple announced only this change to Siri,” Sanders said.
